Most venue checklists cover capacity and catering. Here’s what actually catches people out.
Before you fall in love with a venue
- What’s the exact hire window? Some venues give you the full day; others hand over just a few hours either side of the ceremony, with a hard stop that can cut a reception short.
- Is there an in-house caterer, or can you bring your own? In-house is simpler; outside catering is often cheaper but adds a supplier to manage.
- What happens if it rains? If any part of your plan is outdoors, ask specifically what the backup space looks like, not just whether one exists
The questions people forget
- Accessibility — for older guests, wheelchair users, or anyone who’ll struggle with stairs or gravel paths.
- Noise curfews — some rural and residential venues cut music off earlier than you’d expect.
- Corkage and cakeage fees — bringing your own alcohol or cake can incur a per-bottle or per-slice charge that adds up fast.
- Changing rooms — useful if you’re changing outfits between ceremony and reception.
Before you sign anything
Get the exact cancellation and rescheduling policy in writing, confirm what’s included versus what’s an add-on (tables, chairs, linens are often separate), and ask how many other events run on the same day if it’s a multi-space venue.
Once you’ve chosen, our UK wedding budget breakdown can help you sense-check whether the venue fits realistically into your overall spend.
